Support from the Leathersellers' Company

How the Leathersellers' Supports the Trust

The Leathersellers’ Federation of Schools develops the vision of Joseph Prendergast, who founded Lewisham’s first girls’ secondary school in 1890 on a site provided by the Leathersellers’ Company.

The Leathersellers continues to provide long-term support to the schools through nominating Foundation Governors as well as offering regular financial assistance to enrich the quality of education, well-being, and access to opportunity.

Since 2018 the Leathersellers’ Foundation has provided £1.2m to help pupils achieve their potential.

In recognition of the vision and leadership of each school, and the importance of every stage in education, the Leathersellers’ Foundation has recently increased the unrestricted support available. For the next five years, each primary will now receive £15,000, each secondary £20,000, and the Sixth Form £10,000 per year, to spend on enrichment activities as they see fit.

This £100,000 annual contribution is in addition to a range of project specific initiatives focused on social mobility, alongside encouragement for students to take part in their own fundraising through the offer of match-funding up to a total of £15,000 across the Trust each year.

Students also have additional opportunities enabled by the Leathersellers, including eligibility to apply to the Foundation’s Student Grants Programme, with awards of up to £5,000 a year for up to four years for those facing financial difficulty when going to university. Throughout the year the Leathersellers are pleased to welcome students to Leathersellers’ Hall, not just to learn more about the Company and its heritage, but also to supplement and reinforce learning, from Year 11 cookery students experiencing a professional kitchen with the Leathersellers’ Executive Chef, to Sixth Form historians who engage with centuries of history via the Leathersellers’ Archives & Library.
